Crochet Pattern Maker does two things: it turns pictures into filet crochet charts, and it brings a shelf of century-old pattern books back into use — properly restored, not just scanned.
Where the vintage patterns come from
Our library is restored from The Priscilla Filet Crochet Book, No. 2, by Mrs. F. W. Kettelle, published by the Priscilla Publishing Company of Boston in 1914. The book is in the public domain, which means these designs belong to everyone — including you, including commercially: items you crochet from them are yours to sell.
"Restored" means more than photographing old pages. Century-old plates are printed on yellowed paper with hand-drawn grids that wobble and drift. We re-chart each design from the original plate into a clean digital grid, then cross-check the result against the mesh counts printed in the book's own captions before a pattern enters the library. Where a chart is shaped — edges that step in and out — we say so on the pattern page rather than pretending the written rows cover everything.
We are an independent site with no connection to any past or present publisher. The original book's designs are reproduced because the law and the spirit of the public domain allow exactly that; the restoration work, the modern written instructions and the tools are ours.
How the chart maker works — and what it does with your images
The chart maker converts an image or a typed word into a grid of open and filled meshes, draws the chart, and writes the row-by-row instructions using the same conventions as our restored patterns (foundation chain = 3 × width + 1; ch 3 or ch 5 turning chains; US terms).
It runs entirely in your browser. Your image is read locally, converted locally, and never uploaded — there is no server on the other end and no account to create. Close the tab and nothing of yours remains here, because nothing of yours ever arrived.
What we promise, and what we don't
We promise the charts match the plates and the printed mesh counts, and that the written rows match the charts — they are generated from the chart grid itself, not typed by hand. We do not promise finished sizes: filet gauge depends on your thread, hook and tension, so every size on this site is an estimate and every pattern tells you to swatch. When a convention varies across the crochet world (foundation counts, turning chains), we name the one we use so you can adapt.
Found a mesh that looks wrong, or a row that does not add up? We want to know — each restored chart is verified, but a century-old plate can still surprise us.
